Chaplin helped to collect, restore, renovate and conserve antique machinery and tools. He would dissemble and reassemble machinery and metal tools having cleaned and polished all the parts; he would repair and revarnish wooden articles; and having consulted old catalogues, photgraphs and other available evidence - repaint the items in their original colours and designs.

His preoccupation with old agricultural objects was to dominate the remainder of his life and artistic output. His prints of this time, a small selection of which is shown here, constitute a remarkable record of antique country items, where every detail is faithfully and accurately portrayed.
